September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Participating in this event will also allow you and your family/friends to Smile and Make Your Own Memories.
Energized by Ebony was created by Beth Ann Fawcett, Ebony’s mom, to fulfill the wishes made by Ebony to help kids like her “Keep Smiling & Keep Making Memories” as Ebony and Beth Ann had done during her journey with childhood cancer. Ebony battled Stage 4 Neuroblastoma four times in her nine years. Ebony entered Heaven on July 8, 2014 at 1:08 p.m. surrounded by her mom, grandma, grandpa, uncle and doctor. Energized by Ebony provides activity bags to children battling cancer. The bags consist of activities the children and do on the hospital trays covering their beds. To date over 2000 bags have been given out in the Northern Indiana. A full list of the activities placed the bags can be found at www.energizedbyebony.com.

The Energized by Ebony non-profit organization held its second annula wiffleball tounament last weekend and - despite wretched weather that kept crowds down - raised nearly $5,000 to be used in the fight against childhood cancer. The tourney was held to honor Ebony Ann Fawcett, who died in 2014 after battling Stage 4 Neuroblastoma for many of her nine years of life. Ebony's mother, Beth Ann Fawcett, organized the tourney and thanked sponsors, players, umpires, volunteers, family and friends, the Decatur Parks and Rec and the Decatur girls' softball league. To date, Energized by Ebony has handed out more than 1,000 activity bags to local pediatrican oncology patients. Donations are always accepted by contacting Fawcett at 223-0087 or by email at energized-byebony@yahoo.com. Next year's tourney is scheduled for Sept. 16.
DECATUR, Ind. (WANE) The rain didn’t stop dozens of people from hitting the baseball diamond for a good cause. More than a hundred people showed up to Hanna Nutman Park in Decatur ready to play some ball. It was all in the name of one special little girl. “We wanted to do something family oriented and I went to go watch Ebony’s friends play softball over the summer,” said Fawcett. “One of the dads said why don’t you do a whiffle ball tournament… and it turned from there.” Ebony Fawcett was 9 years old when she lost her battle with cancer last year. Her mother Beth Ann Fawcett, created the nonprofit “Energized by Ebony” in her honor. “Ebony inspired a lot of people, she had a huge heart and all she wanted to do was help make other people happy,” said Jared Fawcett. Family and Friends say she always had a smile on her face even during her sickest days. “We went to the local dollar tree and picked up 25 coloring books and 25 packs of crayons and she and I walked them through the hospital and gave them to the kids,” said Fawcett. In an effort to carry on the legacy, Ebony’s family takes 50 to 60 “activity bags” to children in the hospital battling cancer. “Ebony gained her angel wings July 8th 2014, so we started a few months after that,” said Fawcett. Since then they’ve handed out more than 500 bags. Those bags include itunes cards, hand held games and coloring books– anything that the patients can do on a hospital tray.” This is the first wiffle ball tournament, and according to Beth Ann it won’t be the last. The plan is to make this an annual event. Money raised helps the family make more of those bags. For Fawcett it also helps with the grieving process. “My payment for all this are the sweet cards and pictures that our drawn from the people who get our bags,” she said. The organization is funded by friends, family and sponsors. For more information on how you can help you can visit their facebook page Energized by Ebony.
